Hamilton combines one of Ontario's oldest residential housing stocks with steady demand from students, healthcare workers and households moving west from the GTA. Hamilton introduced a rental housing licensing program for smaller rental buildings, beginning as a pilot in selected wards near McMaster University and Mohawk College. Licensed properties must meet property standards, fire, electrical and zoning requirements. The program's boundaries and scope have changed over time; confirm current requirements with the City before leasing.
Short-term rental operators in Hamilton require a City licence and must comply with the applicable zoning and licensing by-law.
The Residential Tenancies Act, 2006 governs rent, deposits, entry, maintenance obligations and termination, with disputes heard by the Landlord and Tenant Board.
